VALLEY OF THE SHADOW--
A Mother's Journal Through
Her Child's Battle with Cancer

by
Linda Hovestadt Clark

(The story of Jessica Clark Tayon's battle
with squamous cell esophageal cancer.)

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for You are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me."
Psalm 23:4

"Mom, I'm having trouble swallowing."

With these words from fourteen-year-old Jessica, the Clark family is plunged into the bewildering and frightening realm of cancer diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis is squamous cell esophageal cancer, an adult cancer perhaps never before seen in one so young. This painfully honest account, 230 pages written from a mother's heart, describes the harrowing roller coaster ride a family endures when a child is diagnosed with cancer. It is the true story of the indomitable spirit of a child, the love and faith of her family, the skill and caring of dedicated physicians, and the sustaining power and grace of our God.

A note from the author . . .

All parents think their children are the brightest, funniest, smartest, most beautiful, most wonderful kids in the world, and I am no exception. I have three daughters, and each of them is special in her own way. I couldn't imaging outliving any of them.

VALLEY OF THE SHADOW--A MOTHER'S JOURNAL THROUGH HER CHILD'S BATTLE WITH CANCER is a book I hope will inspire and educate its readers. During the time when our Jessica was diagnosed with and treated for esophageal cancer and its aftermath, I found the Lord leading me through deep spiritual valleys and toward great spiritual heights.

What started out as a means of tracking Jessica's appointments, chemo, radiation, and surgery dates on a calendar evolved into a journal of sorts -- the record of an increasingly surreal and lifechanging string of events. Because it was so evident that God's hand was upon us, I felt the need to chronicle the intense spiritual impact these events had upon our lives.

I sat down and pounded out a manuscript, presenting the first draft to Jessica as a gift. She promptly put it away, saying, "It's too painful. I don't want or need to be reminded of all this stuff." Okay . . .

A couple of months later, Jessica admitted to me that she had read VALLEY, and that it was "not too bad." I asked her if I could try to get it published in book form, and she was horrified. "NO!" she said. "I don't want my friends knowing all this personal stuff about me."

A few more months went by . . . and again Jessica changed her mind.

After several close friends read drafts and offered their encouragement, I chose to self-publish in 2004. (Some of the responses people have sent are posted elsewhere on this website.) That was 300 copies ago. I marketed this book to coworkers, fellow church members, friends, and neighbors. I gave away copies to family members, Jessica's doctors, and cancer organizations.

Now, after three years, VALLEY OF THE SHADOW has REALLY been published through Pleasant Word Publishing, the print-on-demand division of WinePress Publishing. Around September 1, 2006 this book became available through Christian bookstores (special ordered on request only), on www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com, and www.pleasantwordbooks.com.

If you're here, perhaps you've already purchased a copy or are considering purchasing a copy of this book. My prayer is that Jessica's inspiring and uplifting story will be a blessing to you.

Though Jessica went Home to be with the Savior on January 15, 2007 (see the occasionally updated "REST OF THE STORY" page), she leaves a legacy of love and faith and courage. Please pray for her grieving husband Scott.

Warmly,
Linda Clark
